The instinct to protect one’s young is a powerful force shared across all species—and that was made heartbreakingly clear on South Korea’s Jeju Island, where a devoted mother dog risked everything to stay near her pups.
Karlee, a committed volunteer with a local rescue group, was alerted to a litter of puppies hidden under a stack of lumber that was about to be removed. Time was running out, so she and her team quickly got to work.
They placed food and water near humane traps to lure the frightened pups out. Karlee returned regularly during her breaks, hoping to catch sight of them. After several days of waiting, the puppies finally appeared—but there was still one piece missing.
